How were the Anzacs thought of by other nations?
The Australian troops, from the British perspective, were seen as dirty and undisciplined people who need a serious shave that have no respect, which was true, for the English commanders (unless they were friends with them). This text is from an Australian officer who wrote about what the English thought of them- “Right from the beginning, English officers complained about the undisciplined behaviour of the Australians. Their officers and soldiers did not keep the necessary distance, they dressed improperly, even with nonchalance - some didn't even shave every day. And some soldiers even dared to object if they had to carry out a task they did not like."- thanks to the following site for this information- http://mtmariasose10-2.wikispaces.com/The+impact+of+WW1+-+how+it+shaped+Australian+Identity Though when Sir Maurice went to see what all the fuss was about, he discovered that Australian and New Zealand men were hard working, brave, and intelligent and risked everything to save a mate. This is what he said- “I do hope that we shall hear no more of the 'indiscipline' of these extraordinary Corps, for I don't believe that for military qualities of every kind their equal exists. Their physique is wonderful and their intelligence of a high order”. -Thanks to the following site for this quote- http://mtmariasose10-2.wikispaces.com/The+impact+of+WW1+-+how+it+shaped+Australian+Identity |

How did Australian men get the name Diggers?
On the first day of Gallipoli, is when the men of Australia got the honourable name of ‘Diggers’. This is because when they breached the shores of Gallipoli the men could not hide anywhere and had to keep fighting not matter of the cost. But when the soldiers got to the top of the hills, they had no cover and could not retreat, instead they were told to ‘Dig in’, and that is what they did. They got out there little spades, and dug a small hole, just big enough to fit in, and hid from the fire of the Turks until it was safe to come out. And this is how the soldiers of Australia got there name ‘Diggers’ and proud of it they are. Since world war one the Australian soldiers have been called diggers and shall be from now on. |
